Brad Lander, the New York City comptroller and a candidate for mayor, was arrested for allegedly assaulting law enforcement and impeding a federal officer while at an immigration court on Tuesday, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

Lander, a Democrat, was escorting a defendant out of immigration court in Manhattan on Tuesday when he was "taken by masked agents and detained" by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, his campaign spokesperson, Dora Pekec, said in a statement.

A DHS spokesperson said in a statement that "it is wrong that politicians seeking higher office undermine law enforcement safety to get a viral moment."

"No one is above the law, and if you lay a hand on a law enforcement officer, you will face consequences," the spokesperson added.

 

The jury did not reach a verdict Monday on its first full day of deliberations in the second murder trial of Karen Read, who is charged with killing her Boston police officer boyfriend in a case that has generated more than three years of heated debate.

Jurors began deliberations late last week, more than a month after the trial started.

Read, 45, is accused of striking John O’Keefe with her car outside a suburban Boston house party and leaving him to die in the snow in January 2022. She has been charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter and leaving the scene.

Read's lawyers say O’Keefe, 46, was beaten, bitten by a dog, then left outside a home in Canton in a conspiracy orchestrated by the police that included planting evidence against Read.

Read's second trial followed similar contours to the first, which ended in a mistrial last year.

Read has never been jailed for O'Keefe's killing. She did not testify at her first murder trial or this one.

Defense argues Read was framed

Defense attorney Alan Jackson began his closing argument Friday by repeating three times: “There was no collision.” He told the jury that Read is an innocent woman victimized by a police cover up in which law enforcement officers sought to protect their own and obscure the real killer.

He repeatedly attacked the lead investigator in the case, former Massachusetts State Trooper Michael Proctor, who was fired after sharing offensive and sexist texts about Read with friends, family and co-workers. He said Proctor's “blatant bias” tainted every aspect of the corrupt and flawed investigation and noted how prosecutors refused to put him on the stand, as they did during the first trial.

Proctor, he said, ignored leads, planted evidence and failed to consider anyone other than Read as a potential suspect.

“Michael Proctor went far beyond just insulting Karen Read. He dehumanized this woman,” he told jurors. “He betrayed her as a human being. He was fired for this blatant bias. If the Massachusetts State Police can't trust him, how can you trust him with this investigation, with your verdict and with Karen Read’s life?”

Jackson was limited in this trial to arguing that someone other than Read killed O'Keefe. Rather than suggesting as many as three people could have killed O'Keefe as he did during the first trial, Jackson singled out Brian Higgins, a federal agent who worked in Canton and had exchanged flirtatious texts with Read. Jackson suggested Higgins was agitated at a bar after Read didn’t respond to his text and had coaxed O’Keefe over to the Canton house party where he was beaten up.

The child is believed to have been abducted by TYLI NEKAH SCOTT, age: 27, race: BLACK, sex: MALE, hair: BLACK IN SMALL BRAIDS, eyes: BROWN, height 6' 1", weight: 173 LBS. Last seen wearing KHAKIS, PLAID SHIRT, AND SKI MASK.

They were last seen on foot.

Cole Escola reacts to making history as the first non-binary person to be nominated for Lead Actor in a Play at the 78th Annual Tony Awards, airing live on CBS and Paramount+.

 

Actor Ed Gale, best known for his roll as Chucky in the Child's Play film series, has died at the age of 61, a source with knowledge of the situation confirmed to TMZ.

Gale reportedly died while in hospice care in Los Angeles, the source confirmed. Kayse Gale, who said she was Ed's niece, also confirmed his passing in a post shared on her Facebook account.

"It is with a heavy heart and a surprisingly light coffin (see what I did there?) that we announce the sudden passing of our uncle, Ed Gale, has taken his final bow and is now headlining in the afterlife," she wrote.

Kayse referenced her uncle's acting career, which included roles in more than 130 films, television shows and commercials.

“With this wide ranging body of work, he leaves behind legacy full of questionable lighting and amazing one-liners," she wrote.

“Ed’s favorite role was that of the ‘fun uncle.’ His love language was sharing his love of the entertainment industry and the magic of Hollywood with his nieces," she added.

Gale, who was born with dwarfism, made his film debut as the title character in Howard the Duck in 1986 before taking on the role of Chucky in the original Child's Play two years later, a role he reprised in the sequels Child's Play 2 in 1990 and Bride of Chucky in 1998. Other film roles included Spaceballs, The Jungle Book and Tiptoes, as well as starring in the children's show Land of the Lost in the 1990s and appearances on Weird Science, Family Matters, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and My Name Is Earl.

Two people were killed and nine others injured in a mass shooting Monday night in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park, authorities said.

The gunfire erupted around 10:27 p.m., Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said during a news conference. The victims killed were an adult man and an adult woman, Bethel said. Three teenagers, ages 15, 16 and 17, are among the injured.

“Multiple rounds were fired,” Bethel said. “Different groups of young people [were] out here.”

The shooting happened after a car meetup, KYW reported.

No weapons have been recovered, Bethel added. The names of the victims have not been released.

When asked if a single gunman was responsible, Bethel said, “We don’t know yet.”

“We’ll be able to determine if it was one weapon or multiple weapons, but it’s pretty rapid fire,” he added.

Video from the scene showed a significant police presence, with officers investigating late into the night.

Earlier in the day, Fairmount Park had been filled with families and community members enjoying Memorial Day cookouts, WPVI reported.

Swift, 35 — who did not attend the Monday, May 26, event, held at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas  — was nominated in six categories. She received nods for Artist of the Year, Favorite Female Pop Artist, Favorite Touring Artist, Album of the Year and Favorite Pop Album for The Tortured Poets Department and Collaboration of the Year for “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone.

Although Swifties excitedly took to social media to encourage fan voting, Swift ultimately lost out in all her categories, with Artist of the Year, Favorite Female Pop Artist, Favorite Touring Artist, Album of the Year and Favorite Pop Album all going to Billie Eilish.  Collaboration of the Year, meanwhile, went to Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars for their song “Die With A Smile.”

Prior to the 2025 ceremony, Swift was already the most-awarded artist in AMAs history, with a record 40 wins throughout her career. She most recently attended the awards show in November 2022, taking home six trophies that night. (The AMAs were not held in 2023 and 2024.)

In the weeks leading up to this year’s event, fans speculated that Swift planned to make an announcement at the AMAs. One of the supposed Easter eggs was featured on her website, which listed four items on a prominent menu — Apparel, Music, Accessories and Sale — that spelled out AMAs with each of their first letters.

Swifties also noticed that 12 items on the online store were on sale for 26 percent off. Some reasoned that the 12 represented Swift’s upcoming 12th studio album and the 26 could hint at the AMAs’ May 26 date.

Taylor Nation seemed to get in on the fun too, promoting voting for Swift at the AMAs with a May 6 X post that read, “And our town, it looks so sMall from wAy up here. Screamed, ‘vote for the chairman’ at the night sky!” Again, the capitalized letters spelled out AMAs.

After nearly three years away, the American Music Awards are back and better than ever!

On Memorial Day Monday, the 2025 American Music Awards kicked off live from the Fontainebleau Las Vegas, marking the awards show's first appearance since the 2022 AMAs and its first ever on CBS.

It's been even longer since Jennifer Lopez helmed the broadcast, with the multi-hyphenate set to host for the first time since 2015. She has, of course, long been a staple on the show as a performer and multiple winner.

For Monday's show, Lopez kicked off the night with a rousing performance of "Dance Again." Also performing were ICON Award recipient Janet Jackson and lifetime achievement recipient Rod Stewart. Additional performers include Benson Boone, Reneé Rapp, Gloria Estefan, Lainey Wilson, Blake Shelton, and Gwen Stefani.

Among the stars up this year for AMAs -- which are voted entirely by the fans -- are Kendrick Lamar, who has a leading 10 nominations, Post Malone, who is nominated in eight categories, as well as Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, and Shaboozey, who are all close behind with seven nods.

Meanwhile, Taylor Swift -- who has the most wins in AMAs history at 40 -- is looking to extend her record with six nominations tonight, including Artist of the Year, Favorite Touring Artist, and Album of the Year for The Tortured Poets Department.

Perhaps her most impressive feat on the night was absolutely dominating the online conversation without saying a word, performing, or even appearing on the show .... no matter what was happening,

Swift dominated the conversation as fans anticipated an appearance and, perhaps more importantly to the Swifties, an announcement. The singer is well known for using award shows to announce albums, tours, and the like. She drops hints like she drops hits, and fans have already been seeing 26 (todays' date) everywhere.

It's a testament to her power as a pop star right now that she can be the dominant viral moment of the night for an event she wasn't even at!

Texas, has been charged with first-degree murder as an adult under Texas law. The charge stems from the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet on April 2, 2025.
